This site features opportunities for students ranging from special camps and learning experiences to scholarships. Please remember that Mrs. Goeckel is always willing to proofread applications, essays etc. if time allows.

 

9-12…Holocaust Remembrance Project

Students in grades 9-12 and who are under age 19 may compete in the 2006 Holocaust Remembrance Project Essay Contest. There will be 30 national winners. The 10 first place winners will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington DC, a gold medal, a Certificate of Participation and a scholarship ranging from $2,500 to $10,000. 10 & 11…Upward Bound Math and Science at Saint Louis University

Do you enjoy math, science, and/or computer classes? Students in grades 10 and 11 may apply to a federally funded program focusing on math and science at Saint Louis University. Students will spend six weeks at the campus learning about their favorite subject matter and about college life. If a student is selected, the entire experience (room, board and transportation) is paid for. In addition, students are paid a stipend while they attend. All participants must be US citizens or permanent residents, be currently enrolled in grade 10 or 11, meet income guidelines and/or be a potential first generation college graduate, be reading at or near grade level, and be interested in exploring an enriched math and science curriculum. 9-12…Essay Contests for High School Students on Ayn Rand’s Novels

Students can compete for over $57,000 in prize money by reading books by Ayn Rand and writing essays over them. There are 472 prizes with top prize being $10,000. Freshmen and sophomores read Anthem, and juniors and seniors read The Fountainhead. Go to www.aynrand.org for more details. Note: The WHS library will has the books available.

 

8-12…Kiwanis International is Looking for Leaders

Kiwanis International is creating a new leadership experience for emerging youth leaders. Key Leader events are geared toward students who have completed the eighth grade. Key Leader will be held at Junction City on June 8, 9 and 10. The all-inclusive cost is $150 per person. Local Kiwanis Clubs have been asked to set aside funds, and to identify and sponsor several youth from their community. Ladies Only 9, 10, 11…Project Discovery-This week-long camp at the University of Kansas is a one-of-a kind learning experience for high school girls to explore engineering as a profession.

Session 1-June 10-16 (aerospace engineering, chemical and petroleum engineering, electrical eng. and computer science).

Session 2-July 8-14 (architectural engineering, biomechanical engineering and civil/environmental engineering)

Guys Only…KU Survivor: Engineering Outback- This is a five day camp at the University of Kansas and is designed to let high school guys experience the field of engineering.  The camp is July 22-27, and the cost is $500 for meals, lodging and lab supplies. Focus will include aerospace, chemical and petroleum, civil and architectural, mechanical and race car design, and robotics. Contact: dsprince@ku.edu

8th., 9th., 10th., and 11th Graders- Leadership Camp at FHSU

Students may register for the KYLA Leadership Camp at Fort Hays University that will be held June 20-23. The early bird deadline to register is May 30, 2006, and the final deadline is June 9, 2006. See www.developingleaders.org or phone-785-628-5399 for more details.

 

8th. Graders – Seniors-Key Leader Camp

Kiwanis is sponsoring a leadership camp for students in the 8th. grade through seniors. The Kansas camp will be held June 16th. -18th. on the Washburn University Campus. The cost is $150. See www.key-leader.org for more details.

 

10th. and 11th. Graders- College of Engineering at KSU

Sophomores and juniors with GPA’s above 3.5 may apply to go to KSU’s Engineering and Science Institute (ESSI). The institute is May 28-June 1, 2007, and is held on the KSU campus. The purpose of the institute is to offer an opportunity for high school students to learn more about engineering as well as physics, chemistry, biology and math.

10th. and 11th Graders- Win a trip to Europe, Mac Laptop and a 30GB I-pod

Sophomores and juniors may write an essay regarding the following topic: In our interconnected world, technology can bring you closer, but there is no substitute for experiencing the world firsthand. Describe how technology and cross-cultural experience together have helped you to grow as a global citizen. For more details see www.eftours.com/globalcitizen. Applications are due February 28. Winner will be notified by mail by April 15, 2007. The tour of Europe will take place in July 2007.

 

11th. Graders- United States Military Academy- West Point

Juniors may apply to attend the Summer Leaders Seminar at West Point this summer. Seminars are June 2-8, and June 9-15. Students may apply at http://admissions.usma.edu . The application deadline is April 1.

 

9-12... Kansas Army National Guard - Operation U-Can.

Have you ever wondered what it is like to do Army training?  Here is your chance to spend a weekend with the Kansas Army National Guard.  Learn about camouflage techniques, practice tactics using paintball equipment, show your physical ability on the climbing wall, as well as pushup/situp competition.
