The WCHS Cheer Squad received 2nd place in the 2A division at the Inaugural KSHSAA Spirit Gameday Showcase at the Topeka Expocenter

November 17 & 18, 2017

This event marks the first time ever in state history that Kansas cheerleading squads were able to compete for a rank. Previously, cheer squads have been able to attend KSHSAA-approved cheer festivals that result in squads receiving a I, II, or III rating but not an actual placing.  WCHS cheer sponsor Sharon Huband commented, “Cheerleaders across the state have been waiting for the day that they would be allowed to truly compete against each other, just like other sports teams do.”

The Game Day competition focused on actual game-day situations.  In the preliminary round, teams performed three different times, showcasing their band dance, fight song, and crowd-leading skills, each within a one-minute time limit.

The top six squads in each division moved on to finals where each team had three minutes to showcase their best sideline and crowd-leading material in a game day presentation. During final performances, teams were given an on-the-spot cue of a game-time situation and must immediately respond with an appropriate cheer.

“We are extremely pleased to receive 2nd place in the 2A division. Washington County is now classified as a 1A school, so we were competing in a division against schools and squads with larger numbers than we have.  The judges were extremely tough; the girls really had to pay attention to the smallest details of their performance.  First place went to a very deserving squad from Ellis High School.  It was a great new experience. Everyone is already looking forward to next year’s competition,” Huband said.

A total of 83 squads from across the state competed on Saturday, in their assigned 1A to 6A classifications.

Finalists in the 2A division were:

1st place, Ellis High School

2nd place, Washington County High School

3rd place, Lyndon High School

4th place, Skyline High School

5th place, Stanton County High School

6th place, Canton-Galva High School

Members of the WCHS squad are Holly Delay, Lauren Wyatt, Carly Crome, Kylie Mintzmyer, Kylie Cordry, and Shailyn Zenger.  The squad is coached by Sharon Huband and Sara Vytlacil.
