Winning Varsity Team

WCHS Varsity and JV teams competed in two separate meets on Monday, Jan 8th.   The varsity competed in a 20 team tournament in Wamego and took home first place.  WCHS won their pool with an 8-1 record, losing only to Cair Paravel, a private school from Topeka.  WCHS beat Topeka-Seaman 60 to 35 in the semi-finals and faced Cair Paravel again in the finals winning in a tie-breaker 60 to 50.  Senior Hannah Portenier said, “The competition was pretty fierce, but everyone handled it really well.”  The team was led by Sophomore, Jake Toole, with 26 correct answers followed by Senior, Malachi L’Ecuyer with 18 answers, 11 in math.  Other schools attending were Highland Park, Chapman, St. Mary’s, Concordia, Olpe, Abilene, Wabaunsee, Manhattan, Flint Hills Christian, Topeka Seaman, Clay Center, Silver Lake, Junction City, Marysville, Emporia, Rock Creek, Council Grove, Topeka High and Cair Paravel.   Members of the team were Malachi L’Ecuyer, Hannah Portenier, Malari L’Ecuyer and Jake Toole.


The Junior Varsity team competed in an 7 team tournament at Clifton-Clyde. The team finished with an 2-4 record, winning rounds versus Concordia and Beloit.  The team was led by Sophomore Kody Helms with 10 correct answers,   followed closely by Sophomore Emma Portenier with 9.   Other teams competing in the tournament were St. Xavier, Concordia, Clifton-Clyde, Republic County, Beloit, and Blue Valley.
