Continued Free lunch and breakfast for all students. USD 108 Washington County Schools is pleased to announce that beginning Thursday, September 10, ALL students in USD 108 will be offered FREE lunch and breakfast on a school day basis. The USDA has announced the extension of the Summer Food Service Program and this program will continue with free breakfast and lunch until December 30, 2020 OR until the USDA runs out of money, whichever comes first. USD 108 Kindergarten through 12th grade students will be able to receive school breakfast at no charge during this time. USD 108 Kindergarten through 12th grade students will receive school lunch at no charge during this time. Because of limitations on programs, USD 108 will not be able to continue the afterschool snack at this time. However, we are submitting another grant application and hope to be able to continue this in a week or so. This program is NOT retro-active to the first day of school lunch; so if a family owes money for a lunch balance, that is still due. Families still need to complete the Free/Reduced meal price application because there are other programs which rely on this information for funding. If you are a family who is Remote Learning or are needed to be quarantined, you are still eligible for free lunch and breakfast on a daily basis. Please email lunch @usd108.org to let the district know of your intentions. These meals would need to be picked up outside the elementary school every day at 11:00 a.m. We are excited to be able to offer this to our families. If you have questions, please contact the district office at 785 325-2261, ext 3. Be Tiger Strong!

USD 108 Families, I know you are all anxiously awaiting news on what our schools will look like come August 19. Rest assured, we have been planning for several weeks and we will have our final plan out on Monday, July 27. We know this has been a stressful time and the “not knowing how things will look” adds to the stress. We miss your kids and we miss school! Check our social media sites and look for a school messenger on Monday with details. Much love and appreciation, Denise O’Dea

Our USD 108 Reopening Schools committee has been working hard to provide guidelines to our own reopening schools. We had planned to start school on August 19, 2020 as our calendar indicated. Today, Governor Kelly, announced she will be issuing an Executive Order on Monday, July 20th that will delay the start of school until Wednesday, September 9 This means USD 108's first day with students will be on Wednesday, September 9th. Our administration and our committee were unaware of the plan to delay school until the news conference this afternoon. We will continue to move forward with making plans and preparing for our students to return to school.

The recent events have changed all of our plans. My K-6 students had been learning about Reducing, Reusing, and .Recycling. We had planned on having a “Trashion Show” and modeling styles made from trash. The students were getting excited about doing this. We will do it next year, but it doesn’t mean you can’t have a “Trashion Show” at home! Collect items that would be thrown out and then design your own fashions made with paper, chip bags, whatever you can find. Get creative and please post your photos on Facebook! I would love to see how my kiddos are being creative! And don’t forget to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!

Hello to all my 4th grade parents. This is a message from Mrs. Baker. I was all geared up to see the kiddos this week. We were going to start adding and subtracting fractions, read new stories, learn more states and capitals, and finish researching and writing our Fish papers for the contest in art. Oh well, I guess we will wait a week. I do not have any “work “ to give students this week, but I suggest spending some time on IReady math. Many students are getting closer and/or surpassing grade level topics on their IReady pathways. This is what we want and this is something they can do this week. I encourage them to read and do IReady this week! Stay safe and healthy !

Mrs. Rundle’s second grade small group activity today was a STEM activity. The students had to work together to make a wind powered maze. Through this activity, they learned about the words: push, kinetic energy, friction, and obstacle. The students could only use connecting blocks to make it, they had to work together as a team to make a plan, And then build the maze and make any corrections to the plan that they discovered while making it. Then they raced the glitter balls through the maze using fat straws. Tomorrow, they will race again using different straws and balls to see what works the best to go through the maze the fastest. They learn teamwork, social end emotional skills, vocabulary and worked with numbers for this project.
